Clean Cooking Activities
EWB-HK will build an Open Source Cookstoves Library of extensively characterized open source reference designs for solar cooker, biomass stove, and other cooking solutions based on good DIY designs from the web and in-house development. The designs, with low emissions and other desirable features, will be optimized for easy transportation using off-the-shelf, mass-produced material; and assembly with common hardware tools to facilitate “massive DIY deployment”. A standardized performance specifications evolving from the water boiling test and engineering design characterization practices will be used to benchmark the reference designs with other fuel and non-fuel (mainly solar and electric) cooking solutions to facilitate design improvement as well as selection by organizations seeking clean cooking solutions.
The Library is the engineers' bookshelf and learning platform, including 3D drawings based on the free OpenSCAD 3 modelling software, design calculation spreadsheets, training material, and references for implementors to make informed choices and designers to make adaptation and improvements without duplication of effort. The final goal is to form a network of autonomous groups delivering clean cooking solutions in batches using the "massive DIY deployment" paradigm.
Partnership
Stage 1: Preparation of basic clean stoves design cum 3D modelling course material with worked examples using selected pilot designs; simplified water boiling test and some test results; simplified Library first version.
Stage 2: Conduct courses in universities and then selected secondary schools; recruit designers and implementors; further enrichment of Library with more designs, more comprehensive design characterization,.and wider coverage of water boiling test.
Stage 3: Support deployment based on the growing library and network of trained volunteers.
Stage 4: On-going improvement of the "massive DIY deployment" approach by working with universities, industrial designers, and experts in operational management to increase the effective of creating impact and delivering massive quantity of clean cooking solutions.
