Partnership
EGAN in collaboration with ALHOMA, the District Directorates of Forestry and Commerce in Chokwe, research institute and local communities will launch Clean Stove Initiative (CSI) through market value chains approach. The project introduces efficient kilns using carbonization technology for reduction of losses and environmental damage; significantly cut pollutant emissions; greater community involvement in forest management and governance; plantation programs, training for skills development, awareness raising and a market for a new brand of “green charcoal”, and at the same time brings huge health and economic benefits. The project will also promote the use and distribution of energy efficient charcoal stoves. The project will work in close contact with the local communities. Local small-scale farmers associated in cooperatives will assist the sourcing and will become stakeholders, thus earning a respectable share of the value chain. A small-holder farmer model based on agro-forestry practices will be created combining the plantation of trees for future biomass supply with inter-cropping of food produce to assure short-term profit for farmers. The project will offer opportunity for current charcoal producers to shift to more efficient and sustainable kilns, the possibility to adhere to the certified sustainable brand, and will create an additional market for the use of secondary biomass resources such as agro-forestry residues. The project will partner with local distributors such as grocery stores, microfinance institutions and door-to-door sales network to get the cookstoves and fuelwood in the hands of the customers in the remote areas and will create a website for purchase online (e-commerce)
