Clean Cooking Activities
Working with the Seed Replicator team, NextGene has facilitated young people in Kampala this year (2017) to undertake training on how to come up with business models that can help build renewable energy enterprises. These models were aimed at promoting the conversion of renewable waste into industrial waste such as biogas. These business models that were offered to the young people also support the recycling of polythene bags into usable items such as hand bags rather than letting the polythene material destroy the soil composition since it neither decomposes nor allows water to flow freely through the soil. Finally, the business models support the recycling of plastics for reuse so that there is less and less of the plastics in the environment because they have the same effect on the soil as the polythene. At the same time, NextGene has started a SACCO so that people can be able to invest in the SACCO, generate funds and be able to purchase clean energy resources such as charcoal briquettes. Further, NextGene has offered consultancy and research services to a wide variety of institutions such as MASUPA which is involved in the making of charcoal briquettes. This has been coupled with sensitisation about the use of eco-friendly energy fuels which will ensure a sustainable environment.
Partnership
There will be different renewable energy training sessions that will be conducted by MASUPA Enterprises, the lead applicant. One of the key roles of NEXTGENE, will be to sensitise and mobilise trainees to come for the workshops as well as making visual and written recordings of the proceedings. After the trainings, NEXTGENE will be responsible for;- assessing the effectiveness of the renewable energy training workshops,- determining the level of knowledge & skills transfer to the trainees after which a report will be produced on the same. NEXTGENE will as well create awareness about the environmental degradation among the camp refugees as well as among the residents of the area who are outside of the camp. The environmental degradation which is progressing at an alarming scale in the area and will be addressed through educating people about methods such as use of as sustainable farming methods and planting trees. Further, given the high cases of sexual violence against women and the young girls, NEXTGENE will offer counseling both men and women so that we can counter the rate at which the refugees are contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections such as Syphilis and HIV. There is also an alarming susceptibility of the refugees to catch all kinds of diseases pertaining to the compromised levels of hygiene in the camp. These IDPs in these camps will therefore be trained about hygiene practical methods of preventing diseases such as the importance of washing hands.
