Clean Cooking Activities

More than 50% of premature deaths due to pneumonia among children under 5 are caused by the particulate matter (soot) inhaled from household air pollution.

According to the WHO, around 3 billion people still cook and heat their homes using solid fuels (i.e. wood, crop wastes, charcoal, coal and dung) in open fires and leaky stoves.

Such inefficient cooking fuels and technologies produce high levels of household air pollution with a range of health-damaging pollutants, including small soot particles that penetrate deep into the lungs. In poorly ventilated dwellings, indoor smoke can be 100 times higher than acceptable levels for fine particles. Exposure is particularly high among women and young children.

Partnership

We are a member of the pneumonia innovations team of the UN's Special Envoy for Health MDGs and Malaria and received a people's choice award at the 2015 World Pneumonia summit. for our innovation to treat childhood pneumonia. We are specifically interested in continuing our work to prevent and treat childhood pmeumonia in LMICs.
