Clean Cooking Activities

One of the major sources of livelihood for rural community dwellers is agriculture. They engaged in agricultural activities ranging from production, processing, and marketing of food crops.

During agro-processing of food crops, they usually engage in traditional methods of processing using firewoods for cooking, drying, frying, smoking of food.

Inhaling the smoke from this firewood continuously affects the health of these rural farmers (mostly women and girls).

My grandmother used to be a cassava farmer, and processed the cassava to garri and sell in the market as a business. She made use of firewood for frying the garri, and her continuous inhaling of the smoke from the firewoods affected her health, she later died of respiratory crises.

This traditional method of using firewoods for agro-processing is commonly practiced in rural communities in Nigeria for drying, frying, and smoking foods such as fish, meat, cassava, etc to reduce post-harvest loss.

GLED Energy educates rural farmers (mostly women and girls) on the use of clean cooking stoves to improve agro-processing activities as well as their health and well-being. We also provide affordable clean cooking stoves to them.

Partnership

GLED Energy would like to participate in this partnership in the distribution of clean cooking stoves in rural communities in Niger Delta states and Nigeria at large.

We will contribute to this partnership by organizing community sensitization programs on the use of clean cooking stoves and the effects of firewoods on health and climate change through farmers association, agricultural extension services, market association, local radio publicity, churches, and word of mouth.
