Institutional Stove Solutions
Mission
Our Mission is to provide energy-efficient institutional stoves to the developing world to serve three critical needs: Food Security, Medical Equipment Sterilization, and Clean Drinking Water. Our goal is to provide tens of thousands of stoves to institutional settings to serve populations at risk.

The lack of a safe, reliable, and cost effective means to sterilize medical instruments and dressings® contributes significantly to the spread of disease and infection in medical facilities throughout the developing world. ® We have paired our 60 Liter Stove with a medical grade autoclave manufactured by the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry Co. (WAFCO). ® These two proven technologies provide reliable and effective sterilization capacity for hospitals and clinics-both as backup systems for urban centers for use during power outages, and primary systems for rural clinics without electrically powered autoclaves.® From a cold start, the ensemble completes a full sterilization cycle in less than an hour and requires less than 900 grams wood fuel. ® The autoclave ensemble is easy-to-use and training for technicians is minimal. ® Field trials are now underway at hospitals in Kenya. ® Preventable, water-borne diseases remain a major health problem worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that collectively, these diseases kill 1.8 million children annually, mostly in the developing world. For the past three years, Damon Ogle, InStove's co-founder and head of engineering, has been working on a solution, and now, InStove is proud to announce the creation of a water pasteurizer that works with InStove's 100 Liter Stove. InStove's gravity-fed pasteurizer works with our 100 Liter Stove, destroying microorganisms by heating water to the pasteurization temperature (71®ºC), and then releasing treated water through a heat sensitive valve that prevents cooler, un-pasteurized water from exiting the system. The unit can be used on its own or in rotation with the pot used for cooking meals. The second-generation prototype is now complete and Ogle and Research and Development Engineer Nick Moses are preparing for field trials in Zambia. Preliminary tests are producing up to 100 gallons of water per hour, with 100 percent elimination of pathogens including hepatitis A, E. coli, shigella, entamoeba, retroviruses, polioviruses, giardia, cryptosporidium and the bacteria that cause typhoid and cholera. It is our conviction that world-changing technology should be available to the poorest of the poor, especially to those displaced by manmade or natural disasters. We envision a future in which one 100 Liter Stove with an InStove pasteurizer will produce enough clean water for a village or displaced community at minimal cost to the inhabitants and the environment. In a related development, we are arranging field trials for use of the WAFCO autoclave ensemble to process medical waste – a huge disposal problem and disease vector in the developing world. ® Many medical facilities currently burn medical waste, which releases dangerous toxins into the air, or bury waste in landfills that may seep into water sources. ® Our system will allow the safe disposal of medical waste while reducing air pollution and water contamination.® Most displaced people live in regions facing environmental challenges- including catastrophic droughts, desertification, major earthquakes and deforestation- often where wood and other low-tech cooking fuels are scarce. To address this issue and support sustainability, we are committed to the use of biomass briquettes as a viable alternative fuel source to power our stoves. These briquettes are a processed fuel that can be burned as an alternative to wood or charcoal in cooking stoves. Gram for gram, biomass briquettes are equivalent to wood. Readily available raw materials can be used such as crop wastes, dung, waste paper, and selected garbage- can be used to produce stick shaped briquettes. As a result, use of wood and concurrent deforestation can be reduced by as much as 80%. Also, the positive impact on the lives of women is significant. Using briquettes reduces the time women must spend collecting wood, an activity which often puts their personal safety at risk. InStove is developing a manually-operated "low pressure" briquette fabricator to be used in conjunction with the stove.®
Partnership
We are a nonprofit humanitarian organization dedicated to supplying proven technologies to the world's most vulnerable people. Recognizing that no single organization can solve the problems confronting vulnerable people in the developing world, we are committed to active collaboration with other agencies, governments, individuals, and companies in bringing our innovative solutions to as many people as possible.
