Clean Cooking Activities

Improve cooking stove is neither high tech nor expensive. Yet only for knowledge gap our women are suffering and we are destroying our forest and generate green house gas. From the baseline survey it was found that 87% families used traditional earth hole stove, 13% used other traditional stove and none of them used Improved Cooking Stove (ICS). Hence, to reduce the health burden and to reduce environmental impact by forest destruction and green house gas generation 500 units of ICS has already been prefabricated and distributed among the beneficiary families. Regarding amount of fuel of the ICS 66% of the recipients families claimed that it require very less than conventional stove and 20% of them claimed to some extent less than conventional stove. Regarding costing of fuel most of the respondents said that as they are living in the village and use residual biomass as the fuel, therefore they do not need to buy fuel and do not know the costing. But the reality is that less amount of fuel obviously require less costing. Apart from the costing the respondents claimed that ICS has reduced their cooking time that allow women to do other works or they can take rest, this ultimately contribute their family economy and to develop their health. The respondents are also very happy as the ICS liberate less smoke inside the kitchen. Now they do not feel any eye irritation, coughing or breathing problem. These immense impacts encourage JADE to promote more ICS in Bangladesh.

Partnership

Biomass is the dominant cooking fuel in Bangladesh, accounting for 99% in rural and over 60% in urban areas, Biomass usage is diverse ranging from leaves to rice husk briquettes, or wood to dung. 60+% of rural households purchase firewood. Only 11.1% of Bangladesh is covered in forest, according to environmental science 25% should be covered for a balanced ecology. Bangladesh’s forests have decreased by 50% since 1970; however, this appears to have been addressed in recent years. Natural forest cover has even increased .07% over the past 5 years. Historically, cooking fuel use was recognized as a major contribution to deforestation throughout Bangladesh. Otherwise, high concentrations of indoor air pollutants by bio-mass used cooking stove lead to a number of adverse health consequences, which disproportionately burden women and young girls. At these consequences, among other core objectives of JADE environmental conservation and health is two of them and JADE is committed to contribute to improve this situation. JADE is already doing capacity building of relevant manpower, developing local entrepreneur, raising awareness program among beneficiary level as well as designing, producing, distributing and installing of Improve Cooking Stove at grass root level. However, JADE is ready to hold advocacy campaign, dissemination of knowledge among different stakeholders and participate policy making events.
