Clean Cooking Activities
Recently (2016), Lifebuilders implemented a climate change project within the Alore-Ijaiye communities of Akinyele LGA, Oyo state to produce Moringa bio-gel, an alternative fuel for domestic use. Ethanol was produced from Moringa stems and was further processed to obtain the bio-gel for cooking. This is yet to be produced in commercial quantities but with the scale-up to commence soon, production in commercial quantities will be achieved. In addition, Lifebuilders also distributes bio-gel from Carbon Credit Network; this makes Lifebuilders producers as well as distributors of the cooking gel.
In the aforementioned project, seventy women were given clean cookstoves designed by Lifebuilders for test running. Feedback was collected and the next set of stoves will be released soon with the concerns addressed. One hundred and twenty women in Ijaiye were trained on how to use clean cookstoves as well as 3 litres of bio-gel. With support from the Global Alliance, Lifebuilders will reach out to more women with more clean cookstoves and more bio-gel.
Partnership
Lifebuilders has set out to alleviate the suffering of women in rural areas who spend unpaid hours in the bush searching for firewood and exposing themselves to harmful gases when cooking with biomass and kerosene stoves.
In partnership with Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, Lifebuilders will reach out to more households in the South Western region of Nigeria in terms of awareness creation on the dangers of cooking with biomass and kerosene stoves. Also clean cookstoves and bio-gel will be distributed to households across the region. In terms of how Lifebuilders can contribute, Lifebuilders will set up a stove fabricating workshop at strategic positions in the South Western region of Nigeria, experts will be engaged to train women and youths on how to design locally made clean cookstoves that are affordable and suits the needs of rural dwellers. This is in line with the goal of Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves which is to reach out to 100 million homes to help them adopt clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020.
