Clean Cooking Activities
There is a real need in India to change behaviours and develop awareness within marginalized communities. The number of people affected by COPD is increasing day by day.
Magic Bus reaches out to 250,000 marginalized children and 8,000 marginalized young people across 20 states in India. Our work is all about making sure each child has the kind of childhood she deserves,so that by the time they grow up, they can access a choice of livelihood options, and break out of poverty. They do this by learning key behavior changes and life skills to help get them back to school and be healthier, among other things.
Marginalized communities are using smoking choolhas inside non ventilated homes. Those people are directly exposed to biomass fuel because of burning every day, coal, wood, animal dung, plastic and all other kind of garbage. On a daily basis, 4.3 million of the world’s population uses open fires or traditional stoves to cook, more than 1.5 million people die prematurely due to exposure to biomass fuel and more cough each day. Indoor air pollution can impact more than 90% of the population of the world poorest countries.
In India:
- There are 620,000 premature deaths due to Air Pollution
- 70% of homes use biomass fuel for cooking and heating purposes, which is by far the greatest source of pollution
- Over a million people die from exposure to household air pollution (VS 4.3 million in the world)
- More people have severe cough, congested eyes or sore throat
Partnership
Our aim is to create awareness on lung diseases and COPD to three different slums (Delhi, Thane, Chandrapur) and promote the use of smokeless choolhas. The objective is to reduce Indoor Air Pollution (IAP) to decrease the growth of people suffering from such diseases through sport development approach and solutions. Because respiratory diseases are invisible, there is a lack of awareness and so communities are not aware of alternative or do not know the damage on their health while using such products for cooking. Awareness on health and family’s budget and successful methods to change behaviours will be needed to develop the use of smokeless choolhas for low and middle class income in poor communities. Through community’s leaders and help of doctors, we work closely with Cookstoves companies to increase the use of smokeless choolhas and change minds to hesitant and reluctant people. Methods and messages are key success to our project. We are looking to work on a behaviours revolution and expect this project to be duplicated as much as possible.
