The mandate of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development (MEMD) is "To establish, promote the development, strategically manage and safeguard the rational and sustainable exploitation and utilization of energy and mineral resources for social and economic development.

Clean Cooking Activities

Uganda has a National Domestic Biogas Programme which seeks to have 13,600 biogas plants constructed in households to curb indoor air pollution and to reduce on the rate of deforestation attributed to firewood harvesting.

The Ministry also has a Modern Biomass for Rural Development programme whose main objective is to increase of indigenous and environmentally friendly fuel derived from biomass to generate electricity for productive use and thermal energy. the technologies promoted are: gasification, biogas, biofuels, briquetting and energy crop growing for biofuel production.

The Ministry also has a Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency programme that seeks to disseminate 50,000 household improved cook stoves, 400 institutional cooking systems and to save 350,000 tonnes of fuel wood each year among others.

Partnership

In Policy development with specific interest Biomass Cooking fuels and improved biomass technologies, and generating a sustainable biomass supply, Biomass meets the energy needs of more than 90% of Uganda's population. The Ministry would like to participate in meeting The Alliance 100 million cookstoves by 2020 objective through capacity building, research and development to localize most modern biomass technologies and market development.
