Organization

National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos"

Mission

The N.C.S.R.“Demokritos” is the largest research facility in Greece. It supports
a wide gamut of scientific research from nuclear and environmental technologies to microelectronics and material science. The Institute is has expertise on all aspects of the environmental impact of air pollutants, inclduing:
a) Exposure to aerosol contaminants on humans
b) Source apportionment/receptor modelling
c) Development of novel sampling and measurement techniques
d) Physicochemical aerosol characterization

Clean Cooking Activities

Among the several research activities that our Institute supports, one important area of our work is dedicated to the characterization of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere, i.e the quantification of the total carbonaceous aerosol, the differentiation between black and organic carbon, and the source-apportionment of the different combustion processes contributing to their ambient levels.

With regard to the emerging evidence that domestic biomass combustion can be a significant cause of deteriorating air quality in many regions of the world, our Institute has participated in recent years in several projects that aim to quantify the impact of emissions from domestic use of biomass (for cooking as well as heating) on the atmospheric load, during field-based campaigns as well as during laboratory/chamber experiments. As a result, we have strong expertise in measuring with state-of-the-art techniques the carbonaceous aerosols, as well as conducting source-apportionment and deriving emission factors.

Partnership

We could conduct field studies to measure carbonaceous aerosols emitted during cooking-activities in laboratory experiments or field-based campaigns. We are interested in the characterization of stove emissions (from traditional and improved cookstoves), with the aim to provide emission factors, emission rates, as well as indoor/outdoor concentrations from a health-effects perspective.
