Clean Cooking Activities
NIH is supporting ongoing HAP research and training programs in India, Nepal, China, Ghana, Kenya, Peru, Bangladesh, and Guatemala. In May 2011, NIH partnered with other U.S. federal agencies to conduct a state of the science workshop on HAP that explored the best approaches to solving this global problem (Science 2011). An NIH-funded study in Guatemala recently showed improved cookstoves with chimneys reduce HAP by 50-90% and save children from dying of acute pneumonia (Lancet 2011). This seminal study offers the promise that cookstove interventions can effectively save lives.
Partnership
NIH is a national partner of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves.
