Clean Cooking Activities

Since Sept 2016, NRC Kenya has been partnering with Sanivation Company to pilot the sale of charcoal briquettes in Kakuma. The Sanivation briquettes used in the pilot are produced from fecal sludge from 250 households in combination with carbonized biomass waste. Selected households are provided with container-based toilets where wastes are contained, treated, mixed with charcoal dust and converted into briquettes.

Partnership

NRC Kenya will partner with Prime Cookstoves, Njuca Consolidated Co Ltd., and Light Africa Right (LAR) to enhance access to clean cookstoves and sustainably produced briquettes to refugees and host community in Kakuma, Kenya. It builds on an ongoing pilot project targeting the same population but with some variations to the approach based on the lessons learnt so far.
Each partner will play unique and complimentary roles:
a) NRC will facilitate Prime and Njuca’s entry to the target communities and access to distribution channels for stoves and briquettes; store stoves and briquettes; and organize local groups to gather briquette feedstock.
b) Prime will manufacture the biomass cookstoves to be sold to the target population; and provide training in stove sales and after-sales service.
c) LAR as Prime’s distributor in Kenya will import Prime stoves and ensure delivery to the Kakuma for distribution.
d) Njuca will supply initial briquettes to NRC’s distribution hubs and train youth to develop fuel from locally-available materials and usage.
