Organic Perspectives
Mission
Our mission is to engage smallholder farmers in protecting forests, adopting organic
gardening techniques and the use of modern renewable energy for sustainable
livelihoods. We are currently implementing our “Budiope Rural Households Biogas
Project†in Buyende and Kamuli districts (Eastern Uganda) since November 2010. Over 10
fixed dome household biogas digesters are now complete and an increasing number of
farmers are signing up each day.

Clean Cooking Activities
Our work altogether is implemented through agroforestry, waste-to-energy (biogas) and
organic gardening. We are implementing a community agroforestry project in partnership
with Trees for the Future1 (USA) through which we have now given out about 100,000 free
saplings of multipurpose and fast-growing leguminous trees to our target farmers in Kamuli
district since 2008.
Our biogas construction activities started November 2010 and we are currently working in
partnership with the “Uganda Domestic Biogas Programme†(UDBP) that was launched January
2010. The UDBP trains our biogas masons and also provides digester installation subsidies
worthy about $320 to any of the households that my team signs up. The UDBP's subsidy
support is, however, only limited to digesters in sizes of 6, 9 and 12 cubic meters only.
My organization targets both rural and peri-urban farmers who depend on fuelwood for
household energy, anywhere in Uganda—nationally—though we are initially in two districts.
Partnership
We are having a rich resource base of skilled manpower—the biogas masons. Now, as the UDBP
is ONLY providing digester subsidies of $320 to farmers that are able to take either the 6M3,
9M3 or 12M3 digesters, we would be happy if the Alliance Partnership could provide similar
(though little) support to smaller households (4 – 5 people) where smaller digesters of 2M3 and
4M3 would suffice. Support is basically needed for key inputs (e.g. gas lamp and stove, dome
pipe and a few fitting accessories) that are essentially unavailable locally but would catalyze
uptake when offered. The rest will be my team's work—signing up and training of the farmers.
