Clean Cooking Activities
The main goal for the project is to provide sustainable, affordable and environmentally friendly energy solutions, even to the low income generating group. The efficient stoves are in two categories namely;
a) Household Stoves
i. Basintuthu stove
ii. Modified Welcome Dover stove
iii. Vesto stove
iv. StoveTec/Masheshisa stove
b) Institutional Stoves
i. Lion stove
ii. Rocket Bakery Oven
The programme seeks to help keep the stove prices low and affordable for the consumers. This will be achieved by working with the efficient stove supplier and producer New Dawn Engineering to find a way of subsidizing a significant percentage of the total price per unit stove so that even the low income earners can afford the 2-burner stove with oven. Also terms will be negotiated with the producer to allow paying in installments for a limited period, until the stove is paid in full before the user can take it home.
Working with diverse partners for the extension work, which enabled us to reach all sections of the Swazi nation, from Government departments to stakeholders; Capacitating local builders and welders on skills of constructing a fuel efficient stoves, about 40 men and 15 women have been capacitated on constructing 2 different efficient stoves (Lion stove – Institutional and modified-welcome dover stove – household); The identification of fuel efficient stoves that are widely used and suitable for Swaziland; Formation of the Swaziland National Advisory Group (Government Ministries – Agriculture, Tinkhundla Administration and Development, Economic Planning; Organizations- ACAT, Conserve Swaziland, Swaziland Environment Authority, Swaziland Electricity Company, Swaziland Enterprise and Development Company; Institution of higher learning – University of Swaziland) and having them operationalise project implementation; Formation of a National Stove Builders' Company called Enviro-Friendly Technology Investments (pty) LTD; Undertaking and producing the following in-house, without engaging a consultant; Developing a database of individuals in the stove industry country-wide; Developing an inventory of fuel efficient technologies in Swaziland; Swaziland energy profile; Swaziland pilot study on StoveTec, locally known as the ‘Masheshisa stove'; Wood-fuel pricing data
Stove demonstrations have been undertaken for publicity on such technologies. Quality control is undertaken for all stoves constructed.
Partnership
The Ministry would like to partner with Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves because it seeks to make the nation aware of the benefits of using clean cook-stoves; our project seeks to address the day to day energy needs of the people by providing clean solutions as well as efficient ones.
By sharing experiences both successes and failures on the implementation of such a project with partners from all over the world can help improve the understanding as well as skills to deal with what is literally happening in the country.
Our department can also learn from the best on how to set up a testing and research center on the efficient stoves and the actual skill of testing stove efficiency.
Also it will help keep on pace with the modifications and or improvements made for and on the technologies. Also it will help us be able to set standards to which an efficient stove can be based.
It is also our hope that we get to know different stoves in the market so as to help develop our markets and to create demand as people tend to prefare different things. The skill of capacitating local people on stove construction and selling skills so as to improve their livelihoods to combat poverty. To also get an experience on how our project can attract support or funding from partners or organizations both locally and internationally. Also to have an up to standard effective project that will not be easily forgotten, by putting in place good monitoring systems - a skill much needed.
