Technologies & Fuels
Solar
Other Technologies Fuels
RDF is one of the pioneer organizations in Bangladesh as well as in South Asia (SA) in the renewable energy sector which introduces solar energy for irrigation purposes to reduce food insecurity in the country. Until March 2013, we have installed 11 Solar Irrigation Plants in southern and northern parts of the country. In addition, RDF has been working with Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) as one of the Partner Organization (PO) in Solar Home System (SHS) program and till March 2013 we have installed more than 55,000 SHS in the off-grid areas of Bangladesh.
Clean Cooking Activities
Since 2008, RDF has been working with German Development Cooperation (GIZ) as a Partner Organization (PO) in 25 districts across the country through its 170 Branch Offices and till March 2013 we have installed 14,579 ICSs in the rural areas of Bangladesh. Basically, rural women are our primary targeted population as ICS user. As we know that in Bangladesh almost 50,000 people dies in every year by Indoor Air Pollution (IAP). On the other hand, the current energy consumption pattern had implications not only on the rural energy sector but also on the agro forestry sector, rural economy, health and particularly on women and children in the collection and consumption of fuel wood etc. for cooking. Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI), many caused or exacerbated by IAP, are one of the leading causes of under-five deaths in the country, which has an under-five mortality rate of 77 per 1,000 live births. Still 99% of rural populations are using conventional fossil fuel and only 8.80% of populations are using Methane gas for cooking purposes. So there is a huge potentiality of ICS dissemination both in urban & rural areas.
Partnership
At present, RDF has more than 1,300 experienced staffs those are working in different programs/interventions. As stated above, we have 170 outlets across the whole country. The mentioned data indicates that we have skilled manpower as well as we have established networks. Being a partner of Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves (GACC), RDF can effectively and efficiently operate and manage ICS activities in the whole country and can reduce the health hazards of rural poor people especially which occurs from Indoor Air Pollution (IAP). This initiative can help to upgrade the mother & child health context of Bangladesh.
