Clean Cooking Activities

RIPPLE Africa’s cookstove project promotes the use of a low-tech materials and assembly coupled with sustainable fuel-efficiency which reduces household wood use by 66%.
RIPPLE Africa aims to build stoves in 40,000 homes by the end of 2015 . (Note that RIPPLE Africa has conducted thousands of water boiling and fuel consumption tests using internationally recognised protocols validated by the Shell Foundation and the Malawi Bureau of Standards, to ensure a fuel-efficiency which sees a 66% reduction in wood use in households.
Made from just 26 mud bricks and a mud mortar mix (sand, manure, mud and water), the cookstove takes just one hour to construct and is made from 100% locally sourced materials. The project is entitled Changu Changu Moto means “fast fast fire”, and is a culturally appropriate double wood burner perfectly suited to Malawian cooking methods of preparing rice or nsima in one pot, and vegetables or meat in another pot. Each Changu Changu Moto is built directly in the kitchen of the user, and replaces the need for the old traditional “three stone fire”
The Changu Changu Moto model is strong and durable, and due to the simplicity of its construction, users can easily maintain and repair the stoves themselves, making it one of the most realistic and aptly suited fuel-efficient cookstoves designs for rural Africa we have ever seen!
