Clean Cooking Activities
Sanjal works with a number of community based member organizations. Some of these organizations are interested in supporting clean, efficient cookstove training, distribution, and maintenance support in rural areas of Nepal. The aim is to decrease timber use, both to improve health and improve forest conservation. At the same time, forest conservation efforts must be balanced with livelihoods support, so projects also have a rural livelihoods component. Sanjal’s interest in cookstoves, however, comes with a focus on improving the daily cooking habits and tools used for cooking. Although the focus is currently on hardware, biofuels and biomass is also of interest for future work, particularly since the focal area has limited timber supplies and increasing deforestation rates, especially in fragile ecosystems in hilly areas of Nepal. Sanjal is interested in learning about biofuel and biomass implementation opportunities.
As community organizations with strong local ties and local-level support groups, the training and support provided through these small, short-term projects can have a long-term impact. The areas where these projects plan to work are primarily populated by smaller ethnic groups in Nepal, and the organizations often work through women’s groups, providing voice and empowerment opportunities to traditionally marginalized groups.
Partnership
Sanjal has strong ties with rural community groups and communities in Nepal, which allows it to work closely alongside community members to determine needs and solutions. These relationships also allow for longer-term impact since many members of Sanjal’s network stay in the communities where they work well beyond the project implementation time frame, providing information and follow-up on project activities to community members. Sanjal’s work focuses particularly on marginalized groups in Nepal, working with a variety of small ethnic groups across the country and often making women’s group capacity building a focus of its projects.
As such, Sanjal is well placed to implement cookstove projects, with careful project planning, monitoring and evaluation that contributes to wider learning regarding cookstove project implementation. As a Nepali NGO with a long history of building local capacity in health, education, agriculture, rural livelihoods and peace-building, Sanjal’s past project implementation experience provides a wealth of experience on which to draw for sustainable adoption of new methods and technologies in rural areas.
