Clean Cooking Activities

Our current initiative is the Estufa Finca-Talamanca Project. The project area is in the Talamanca region of South East Costa Rica. We are working primarily with families living on the Bribri Indigenous Reserve. Work began in November 2011 on Phase 1 of this ongoing project. We are transitioning to Phase 2 in November of 2013. Phase 1 activities consisted of distributing (113) stoves to families who signed a contract to participate in a two-year pilot program which included purchasing a subsidized Estufa Finca (Farm Stove), participating in two one day training workshops and recieving (4) technical support and survey visits. (32) households also participated in an innovative 18 month biochar "buy-back" program. Biochar (charcoal) produced as a by-product of the cook-stove was purchased from households at approximately .50 cents USD per kilogram. This biochar was used for research and to build a market for it's use as agricultural charcoal. Phase 2 will consist of scaled up distribution of a 2nd generation stove coupled with increased local entrepreneurial involvement, by indigenous women.
