Clean Cooking Activities
Sensen has been developing products to understand stove adoption and usage. Over the past few years, we have designed and iterated on low-cost stove usage monitors (SUMs) and household air pollution monitors (HAPs) that collect longitudinal data over a period of 6 months to 1 year. The SUMs include a temperature sensor to indicate use as well as a UV sensor to indicate if they are being used indoors or outdoors. The HAPs contain PM2.5, PM10, CO, and a CO2 sensor to indicate common emissions related to indoor cooking. We have conducted multiple product usage and performance evaluations in Uganda, Bangladesh, and India. We currently are working in partnership with MIT D-Lab and Harvard Evidence for Policy Design Laboratory, to study the adoption and emission exposure of improved wood stoves in India. Our research activities have focused on how to incorporate sensors into the monitoring and evaluation of cookstove products in a rigorous and respectful way.
Partnership
Sensen focuses on providing tools and knowledge to organizations to make more impactful and informed decisions. Through the usage of data loggers and data analytics, Sensen is able to determine how cookstoves are (dis)adopted and how cookstoves contribute to household air pollution. Sensen will be able to engage with the Clean Cooking Alliance by collaborating with Clean Cooking Alliance partners to provide more informed decisions about the impacts of cookstoves as well as understand the different monitoring and evaluation needs and research the sector has. Sensen has and will continue to engage with the testing protocols designed and encouraged by the Clean Cooking Alliance to contribute to the evidence base surrounding cookstove adoption and emissions. Because our data loggers are designed for long-term monitoring in rugged conditions, we are able to capture real conditions aligning well with the Clean Cooking Alliance goals. We hope to increase the capacity and effectiveness of the clean cooking sector.
