Clean Cooking Activities

Initial efforts were in 2004 in Darfur assisting Darfur Peace and Development Org. start up a solar cooker effort among IDP. Our technology department improved the “cookit†model of the solar oven and came up with the “polyfurnace†a durable and waterproof plastic cooker to handle the harsh environment of the desert. Efforts also began in the city of Khartoum to help the many IDP living there. We have started efforts among the poor in Ethiopia and Somali Land . We have also done testing in tropical Sierra Leone as it is an example of massive deforestation in the wake of globalization.
The development of the “Sunscoop†as a solar oven also came out these initiatives. Social factors demanded that the solar ovens be larger enough to feed large African families and hold multiple pots of food but be light enough to transport around by a business woman in the market place. The ability to reproduce the solar oven in country by adapting local materials was another factor that went into developing the Sunscoop. The social change and uptake by the average woman is what always hampers this kind of effort. The scope if this effort has been small in relation to the size of the communities. Much of this is do to lack of resources to launch a large effort as well as the necessity of true and accurate social acceptance and uptake by the local population.

Partnership

We produce solar ovens for both the very poor as well as the middle class sectors of society in the developing world. We have experience in production and can localize the production process to each area targeted. We have experience in training local leaders in solar cooking who can reteach the technology to their own people.
