Clean Cooking Activities

SAID has been active in the area of Environment and Climate Change adaptation and mitigation since its inception in 2009. This has been done through awareness raising, hands on interventions and building the capacity of networks in advocacy supporting , government policy decisions as well as the implementations of local climate adaptation and mitigation strategies. Nigeria has been experiencing the impacts of climate change from sea level rise along her coastal lines, intensified disertification in the north, gully erosion in the eastern parts as well as flooding and land degradation. About 90 million Nigerians, and almost all public institutions cook with wood. Many trees are chopped down for firewood, for cooking and baking of bread. Traditional cooking methods are a health risk, they cause deforestation and climate change and the are unnecessarily expensive to some of the world's poorest people. Millions of Nigerian households cook with wood fuel and if nothing is done, Nigerian's remaining forests will be gone within the next ten years. It is estimated that smoke from indoor air pollution contributes to about 95, 000 deaths in Nigeria each year. The poor especially women, girls and children suffer most from the effects of wood fuel. The introduction of clean energy such as clean stoves is saving thousands of lives. Since SAID has women, girls and children as target beneficiaries of its activities, the engagement with clean stoves aligns with our mission.

Partnership

SAID will like to participate in every way in partnership with Global Alliance for clean cookstoves for the the promotion of health and well-being for the poor especially women, girls and children. SAID can contribute by spreading awareness about clean cookstoves, distributing and promoting its adoption in regional and national policies.
