Clean Cooking Activities
Terracon Ecotech is undertaking an Integrated, Carbon-neutral, Sustainable Development project founded on Nature-based Solutions, called Ecological Restoration & Sustainable Livelihoods (ERSL). It encompasses 423 villages inhabited by 415,320 people, and envisions the region to be a low-waste, self-sustaining carbon-sink that produces, consumes and recycles locally. As part of that, current carbon footprint of the region is estimated to be 449,087 tonnes CO2e. Projected emissions for the next 5 and 10 years are 5,59,834 tonnes CO2e and 6,80,817 tonnes CO2e respectively. 50-65% of a household's emissions are contributed by fuelwood (excluding agricultural emissions). Therefore, replacing fuelwood with LPG or using dry wood or coir or crop residue pellets to eradicate emissions from fuelwood, as more feasible, would feature to be a major goal for achieving carbon neutrality.
Base strategies would be awareness campaigns on behavioural changes; promoting gender equality within households (e.g. easy LPG cooking makes cooking as much a man’s task as a woman’s); and innovating models for easier access to the cleaner/more efficient fuels or energy.
Hence, the Clean Cooking Alliance partnership would be invaluable for our project that is one of the first such in India for its integration and large scale.
Partnership
Terracon Ecotech intends to participate as an Implementer and a catalyst for promoting clean cooking. Through ERSL we would work with about 100,000 households. This helps us in manifesting the change 'Clean Cooking Alliance' strives for. The creation of market and funding network is certainly an expected outcome. Our model, once realised, has an enormous potential of pioneering more such transformation throughout the country. This would help Terracon in taking clean cooking to the masses. Eventually we also intend to be a Service Provider assisting fellow implementers in capacity building and execution strategies, and undertake more such projects of our own.
