Clean Cooking Activities
We are a small registered Canadian charity (www.tonembee.com) which has been working closely with the remote villagers of Kithuia, Kenya. Over the past 10 years, through sponsor donations, we have supplied 1,000 SCI-designed solar cookers to the hard-working villagers who struggle with the worst drought, deforestation, and famine in recorded history. These low-tech cardboard cookers have had a well-documented positive impact on the villagers’ health, environment, and well-being. There are still many villagers without cookers and the original cardboard prototypes that were sent in ten years ago, have now deteriorated and need to be upgraded and increased in number.
The villagers are working hard with our help to create their own cookers from locally sourced materials, and we are currently attempting to help them establish a self-sustaining business to manufacture and distribute the cookers. To do that we want to upgrade the cookers to a more durable design that was observed by our Kenyan Board Member, Mr. Nicholas Kithembe when he attended and presented at the Solar Cooker International Conference in Vadodara, India. Since then the villagers have also been working with Mr. Akihiko Kumagai, from the University of Sacremento, CA to test a newly designed Wapi which signifies water sanitation when used in conjunction with solar cookers.
Partnership
We are interested in knowing if we qualify to apply for financial assistance through the Humanitarian Clean Cooking Fund for our project to increase and upgrade our solar cooker program and put a sustainable business plan into effect. This help would greatly increase the number of people we can help for longer periods of time.
We are happy to provide feedback and monitoring on all of our activities.
