Clean Cooking Activities

As an environmental organization, our work installing and maintaining ONIL energy-efficient cook stoves (which use one third of the firewood of an open fire) preserves the forests on the mountains surrounding our lake and reduces indoor and outdoor air pollution. The more than 2,000 stoves we have installed to date will save some 360,000 trees and sequester 26,000 tons of carbon dioxide over the 15 year life-span of our well-maintained stoves. What this means for a Mayan family: no more open fires for children to fall into; the elimination of toxic smoke in the cooking area and the respiratory and ocular problems which it causes; plus great savings in firewood expense or time gathering wood.

Partnership

We would like to share our expertise in garnering the support and adoption of the ONIL stove by our Mayan clients. We have had more than 98% success in obtaining correct usage of the stove -- without this success, the stoves have no impact on the environment, family health or economy. Our woman-to-woman approach has made all the difference in our success.

Ours is a poor community and although the clients' purchase of the stoves represents a significant amount of their family budget, we must look for funds to cover the remainder of the stove cost plus the labor involved in education, installation and maintenance. We would like to become active, involved members of the Global Alliance in order to promote efficient cook stoves as well as be included in any funding opportunities which arise.
