Organization
U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)
Mission
USAID’s mission statement highlights two complementary and intrinsically linked goals: ending extreme poverty and promoting the development of resilient, democratic societies that are able to realize their potential. We fundamentally believe that ending extreme poverty requires enabling inclusive, sustainable growth; promoting free, peaceful, and self-reliant societies with effective, legitimate governments; building human capital and creating social safety nets that reach the poorest and most vulnerable.

The United States government anticipates contributing, subject to the availability of funds, up to $200 million through 2020 towards an enhanced range of work, including: mobilizing up to $125 million in private financing by providing loan guarantees to private capital debt investors in the clean cookstove sector (USAID); investing $59 million in new research to build the evidence base for clean cooking interventions (EPA, NIH, CDC), and contributing $16 million towards field activities to improve health, empower women, mitigate environmental and climate impacts, and foster economic growth (State Department, USAID, EPA, Peace Corps). OPIC is also renewing its commitment of up to $50 million in debt financing support for clean cooking businesses.
