Clean Cooking Activities

Based in Malawi, but with an international remit, the Sustainable Energy Management Unit (SEMU) aims to transition to a social enterprise, providing services within United Purpose, as well as to other organisations, and vulnerable communities. These energy initiatives will meet a fundamental need in communities for improved access to clean household energy for cooking, warmth and lighting, as well as energy provision at public institutions, and have considerable scope for scale up. In Malawi, SEMU is the Secretariat for the National Cookstove Steering Committee and recognised as one of the biggest actors in the cleaner cooking sector. Through its innovative integration of cleaner cookstoves into the Social Cash Transfer programme, it will provide cleaner cooking technologies to over 100,000 ultra-poor and labour constrained households by the end of 2018. We also own and operate our own Gold Standard Programme of Activities, covering clean cooking and safe water supply; the framework is open to any interested organisations on a case-by-case basis. As an INGO we use the carbon revenues for the ongoing operation of the programme, as well as reinvesting all surpluses back into communities through our energy interventions. Carbon credits can be purchased through our fully transparent, not for profit retailer - CarbonUP.
