Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
Clean Cooking Activities
We are an® Liquefied Petroleum Gas® Marketing and Distribution company based in Zimbabwe. As means to tackle energy poverty our company, Ward Energy`s cooperate responsibility involves sustainable selling® Liquefied Petroleum Gas® to poor urban and rural households at cheaper price, renting out or selling cylinders and cooking stoves at a low price. We call the initiative , LPG Impact Investment Program, its primary beneficiaries are women in low income households in rural and urban areas in Zimbabwe. Of all the modern fuels available today, LPG is particularly well suited to domestic cooking and heating because it is clean, safe and very efficient in generating heat and contributes to better quality of household life.®
®
The need for using cleaner fuels has already been established, LPG is being considered as a source of energy because it is one of the relatively clean and efficient cooking-fuel options currently available in the country. Around 70% of people in Zimbabwe still rely on solid fuels – traditional biomass – for cooking on primitive stoves or open fires. Electricity is also expensive and blackouts occur almost everyday for several hours e.g. from 6am to 6pm. Lack of access to energy affects women and girls disproportionately .
LPG Impact Investment Opportunity
Since affordability of LPG is the main access barrier, efforts to tackle energy poverty means some sort of sustainable impact investment has to be put in place. The initial set-up of applications requires some investment, it is an important part of Ward Energy`s LPG Impact Investment Program and the beginning of a process that will change the way in which LPG as means of energy is viewed through-out Zimbabwe.
The socioeconomic impacts of fuel switching can be® categorized® as costs. Most of the costs relate to the initial cost of acquiring the equipment to be able to cook with LP® Gas namely the stove, the cylinder, the pipe and valve, and any related installation costs, as well as the cost of the fuel itself. Maintenance costs are generally minimal.®
Lowering the acquisition cost of the cylinder, stove, or both lowers the barrier to LPG use. Doing so can help the segment of poor households who are able to pay for LPG but find it challenging to save enough money to pay for the start-up cost.®
Small cylinders with a capacity of 4-6 kgs will be used as one way to enable poor households to start using LPG. The cylinder acquisitionrental and refill costs are both lower, and small cylinders are also easier to transport if residential customers have to take cylinders to any of our retail shops where they will buy LPG at a bulk price of $1.90 per kg than our normal retail price of $2.20 per kg saving them at least $0.30 per kg. Our bulk sales start at minimum of 48kgs, so for the Impact Investment Program poor households will be able to buy LPG at the bulk purchase price even when buying just 4kgs.®
The 4-6 kg cylinders will be imported from India or China where they are cheap.® The LPG Impact® Investment® program will also generate revenue from selling or renting® out of these cylinders at a low price that is affordable.
